Dear Father Tim
Thank you for the UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY Belmont Abbey Retreat prayers for all readers of the The hermeneutic of continuity.
Padre Steve aka Father Steve Leake,a Salesian of Don Bosco, has kindly posted my "Remembering the Battle of Fredericksburg" comment on his Blog Da Mihi Animas. The'between the lines' art/music by Josh Turner is certainly a cut above the Deep South,Country & Western stage act that Charlie Kray promoted with a neo-Nazi salute at the St Paul's Crypt KRAYMAYDAY SE8 event.
I thought that as Padre Steve's bloggers profile reveals that he is interested,in all things New Orleans!,that I would alert him to my own New Orleans 'experience' i.e.. vesper has left a new comment on The hermeneutic of continuity post "DVC prompts violence against priest".
As a Deptford Albany orientated artist/surveyor/musician my 'between the lines' case for the defence against wicked NF/BNP/KKK neo-Nazi entry-ism into London's Sporting/Planning Arena includes the 'Arts Lift'YouTube video - Roy Hobson (From Dark to Light Too) which was performed in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham for www.spreadtheword.org.uk 's cityofsharedstories.
As you know I have three wonderful children, and although I have never had gay sex in my life,I am still called a 'poof' (among other things) for including STONEWALL in my emergency communications.
My poor old mum and dad find this whole London development business very confusing indeed.
Hard evidence relating to my high profile FARE JUSTICE NOT VENGEANCE FOCUS 1991-2008 :MPS ref PC/2571/07 case for the defence against NF/BNP entry-ism into London's Sporting/Planning Arena, which was originally backed up by a malevolent prosecution by CID Greenwich after a phone call made by Steve Taylor of the TSG,has been handed to MPS Assistant Commissioner Robert Quick MBA by DS Ian Coleman of the MPS Directorate of Professional Standards,Internal Investigations Command.

The senators should mind their own business... I've heard it's because Feinstein lives in a prominent section of Georgetown nearby restaurants and nightlife. It's basically a senator being a NIMBY while trying to pretend she cares about the city. Also, Bennett is just a typical meddling religious zealot who believes alcohol (and fun) is inherently evil. (That wasn't a pot-shot at religion, just at those who feel it necessary to regulate morality)
If Fenty caves, I will be royally pissed. It's a matter of principle at this point. And David is right that if they're that "concerned" then pony up a few million to help us hire more officers and/or pay for overtime.
by SG on Dec 11, 2008 2:29 pm
I actually think the Senators raise a decent point, but I don't care to listen to it while they meddle in our local decision-making process.
Tim - the flip side, of course, is that the bars stand to benefit from being open. At the expense of the public, who will pay for extra police and so on.
by Alex B. on Dec 11, 2008 2:56 pm
People are going to be celebrating somewhere. Do the Senators think it's preferrable to have people out in the street ala election night? It seems law and order would be easier to maintain with people inside pubs and restaurants rather than outside on ther streets.
by Bianchi on Dec 11, 2008 2:59 pm
What really grinds my gears is the fact that federal government is directing local law enforcement priorities and not footing the bill. You want it your way? Fine, use your own resources.
by Dave Murphy on Dec 11, 2008 8:34 pm
We should stop trying to legislate legal actions which we think could lead to illegal actions, and concentrate on taking swift actions against those illegal actions we don't want to happen in the first place. 99.9% of people who frequent bars aren't going to cause problems irrespective of what time it is or how long the bars are open, the 0.1% of people who will cause problems ... will cause problems ... irrespective of what time it is or how long the bars are open. Let's direct our resources at keeping them in check ... and stop trying to legislate morality. That's not our business.

I think the statistic are a little misleading on Jackson. He was very erratic in 2008. But on nights when he was on, he was very impressive.
But that means you have to put up with him when he's not on. And I don't think you can ignore the many times Jackson was awful and just look at the good outings and call the stats misleading. The stats measure what he did last year. Everyone has good days and bad; that's why we try to look at big sample sizes. And while 2008 was a slight improvement over 2007, he was still pretty awful.
That's not to say he can't be refined, but I wouldn't want to make that bet. Wonderful trade by the Rays.
Also, I can't get enough of this, so I'll repeat it: Jackson had a lower K% than Andy Sonnanstine last year.

You guys are forgetting one very important factor. The Tigers now have a real pitching coach in place of Fred Flintstone Hernandez from last year. Remember Roger Craig. This new could could help.
Rory said,

Your point Teej is definitely a valid one. So far he has been a tease and he has certainly not arrived as a consistent MLB pitcher. By the same token, neither has Joyce. I only saw him twice last year and couldn't see too much with such a small sample size. His minor league stats don't look overly impressive, but folks seem to be high on him so I will look to 2009 with hope. Does he become the next Jason Bay or the next Greg Gross? We don't need another of the later. I am not down on Gross, but no team needs two.
I didn't realize that Roger Craig was the Tiger's new pitching coach. I thought he was about the same age as Don Zimmer - I can't believe he is still around! But if he is still passionate I agree he could make a difference.

I hear you, Rory. Every year I take a flier on Daniel Cabrera in my fantasy league. I'm fascinated by him. Sometimes you just have a gut feeling - even if the player keeps kicking you in the gut.
Rory said,

The Cabrera reference is perfect! He too has traded his high strikeout rate for better control/less walks - but overall has not become much more effective. Just less exciting.
Nolan Ryan is a great example of someone that eventually got it all together after a number of years of teasing with heat and potential. I am not saying Jackson is in that category, just that some guys do come around. That last comparison fails to hang together with Jackson having been one of those million dollar arm/ 5 cent head kind of guys.
Time will tell - I saw his last start of the season against the Twins live and he looked like an all-star. Hopefully he picks up from there.

Virginia Considers Lowering Reporting Threshold

A crash that causes a thousand dollars worth of damage to a bike almost certainly results in some injury, meaning that a written report would have to be filed anyways. This change doesn't really affect cyclists.
Posted by: BubbaBike | December 13, 2008 at 02:44 PM
I think the point is that many bikes don't cost $1000 and so even if it's totaled, it still wouldn't reach the threshold of being reported.

Szakmai honlap helyett szaporodó szakmai blogok

Rabbit · http://rabbitblog.hu 2008.12.11. 21:27:14
Köszi a felhívást =:)
Nekem a blog kb. egyidős a pályakezdésemmel, énblogként indult fw-s tárhelyen 2005 végén.
A "hírversenybe" sem időm, sem kedvem nincs beszállni, maradok inkább a tanulmány, elemzés jellegű bejegyzéseknél.
A blogírásnak elég sokat köszönhetek, barátokat éppen úgy, ahogyan szakmai elismerést.
Bocs, hosszú lett, de vérbeli szófosó vagyok.
onLime · http://onlime.blog.hu 2008.12.13. 17:15:03
Nos - ahogy írtad is - én lennék a legfrissebb…
Forecast Research - www.forecast.hu · http://piackutatas.blog.hu 2008.12.14. 19:51:18
Keresőmarketing - SEO - szempontjaink is voltak, kár lenne tagadni.
Aztán ehhez szép lassan egyebek is társultak. A blog szerkesztése kimondottan kreatív tevékenység, témaválasztás, anyaggyűjtés, képkeresés. Blogolás közben az ember új ismereteket szerez, tágul a látóköre, megismer a sajátjával ellentétes álláspontokat, vitatkozik, kapcsolatokat épít, saját maga is változik...
pinter.robesz · http://www.szonda-ipsos.hu/ 2008.12.17. 10:54:49
A blogolás amúgy kutatóként is érdekel, publikáltam is a témában (legutóbb a pár napja megjelent NHIT-s "Égen-Földön informatika" c. kötetben).

No, Mr. Jeff, there is no way to prevent the "accusation" of hypocrisy, but there are ways to avoid being an actual hypocrite: Hold yourself to the same standards as those you hold others to. For example, if a senator wants to point the finger at people whose income is lower than their expenses, he might consider voting to cut government expenses, starting with his own benefits and privileges, to levels commensurate with revenues. He might consider voting for measures that fully fund future social security obligations, like the domestic automakers are required to do for their pension obligations.

What Time of Year Is It? (Year 4 Follow-up, Part 2)

D**n, you are very reading-challenged and comprehension-challenged.
The post was about how the press describes shopping and layoffs during the Christmas season, and how the trends therein contribute to the credibility of a belief that there is indeed a war on Christmas.
I never discussed "this happy holidays trend. Not once.
The post, and the series, have nothing to do with how people greet each other.
You don't have an argument, so you constantly change the subject.
Merry Christmas.
Comment by TBlumer - December 12, 2008 @ 11:59 am
Ok, so I got a little off topic. What can I say, this whole "war on Christmas" BS gets on my nerves.
Did you ever think to try your Google searches to see how often Christmas comes up in searches related to hiring? Holiday hiring still leads (but then holiday is the all inclusive term), but it's more of a 60%-40% split. But that must not be relevant.
Comment by David - December 12, 2008 @ 1:04 pm
["holiday season" hiring] - 1,302 results (92%)
["Christmas season" hiring] - 114 results (8%)
The Christmas season is one-third or less likely to be mentioned with "hiring" as Christmas is likely to be associated with "layoffs."
QED
Thank you for your support.

Did you search for "Christmas season" layoffs? Try again there Blumer, we could both manipulate our search terms to show we're right here.

Comment by David - December 12, 2008 @ 2:05 pm
Your searches are actually on christmas hiring (2038) and holiday hiring (3052). I'll throw in holidays hiring (plural - 1103).
This puts us into about the same place as layoffs. About 25% relate to Christmas, 75% to holiday(s). That's funny, because everyone I know without exception who goes to the stores says they're doing "Christmas shopping." So people getting hired for the season must be getting hired because of ….. Christmas.
The problem is that there are no prior-year metrics to compare.

QUAERITUR: Tips for jumping into the deep end of the Latin Breviarium Romanum

John Zuhlsdorf @ 8:29 am From a reader: So, I've resolved to get a Breviarum Romanum set, but I was holding out for Baronius Press' because it is rumored to have both Latin and English text. I have been wondering if there is forum on the internet anywhere, where people learning the EF breviary could ask questions. I have been praying it for some time, but still wonder about things that are not clear in the rubrics (e.g. when kneeling from the collect onward on ferias of Advent, what do you do at prime where there are three collects with other material between them?).
Anyway I made the switch to Latin in this way: Prayed LOH in English for several years. Started taking Latin. Started praying parts of compline in Latin. Had a bilingual LOH book for Lauds and Vespers, prayed it in Latin (continually looking at the English). I then purchased the Latin LOH and used that each day (where possible). When couldn't understand something, I just kept going, keeping a general intention to pray with the Church. I then used a bilingual copy of the Breviarium Romanum (the one that Baronius is supposed to be reprinting). The bilingual copy allowed me to see the rubrics in english (which can be purchased separately now). Finally, I began to use an all Latin copy. On feast days etc., if I do not understand something, I often refer to breviary.net. Even now, I do not demand from myself total comprehension. However, the psalms are familiar enough that I almost always know the sense of what I am saying. My comprehension of readings vary. I think that using an all Latin copy really accelerated my understanding of the Latin. When the English was there, and when I was first starting out praying in Latin, there was a real temptation to look at the English every few seconds.
Comment by Mark - 11 December 2008 @ 4:48 pm
I am thrilled to see that some commentators understand that having a vernacular text alongside the Latin is useless at best, and most likely a hindrance. Why? Because Latin must be understood in Latin. Forget your vernacular if you want to learn Latin. But "I don't understand", you might say. Well, give it time. And anyway, you still don't understand it even if someone translates it for you. You just understand the translation. You're fooling yourself thinking that you're making progress, while actually, you're slowing yourself down.
Comment by Andreas - 11 December 2008 @ 5:04 pm
I wholeheartedly agree with Andreas. Latin must be understood in Latin.
That is why I said it was important to understand why this and that in Latin mean this and that, and why a translation is often a hindrance in this process, as compared to a dictionary and a grammar. The most important step in really learning a language is when one stops translating, when things in that language have their own sense, often impossible to translate.
I.e., "Se promener" is not the French for "to walk aimlessly". It is a different thing. Likewise, "to stand" does not mean "être debout". Nonetheless, those are the translations that would ordinarily be given within a text.
Any text has several layers of meaning, and most of them are lost in translation. There is simply no word in one language that corresponds to another word in another language (in Portuguese, "pai" is a father of children and "padre" is a priest; after Vatican II, the First Person of the Most Holy Trinity ceased to be Deus Padre and became Deus Pai, changing the Our Father, the Credo…), no turn of phrase that corresponds with another, etc. In order to understand Latin, one must understand what is said in Latin, not the translation someone made.
I have my fair share of academical degrees in translation, and I have been studying it and working with it for a few decades now, and I can tell you they are quite overrated. There is no such a thing as a perfect translation; the use of translations in learning a language is very limited, and must be strictly rationed.
It is easy to see what I mean when one uses a bilingual missal: how often have you passed beyond the "this Latin text means this English text" and really understood why the Latin word ended with this and not that desinence? Even when one sings or repeats the words, quite often they are not much more than a sequence of sounds whose "meaning" is understood to be an English sentence.
For instance, "Dominus meus et Deus meus" is not "My Lord and my God", as you could perfectly well say "My lord and my God" while directly addressing Him (such as in "My Lord and my God, help me learn Latin!"), while for that use you would need to use the vocative ("Domine…") instead of the nominative ("Dominus…") in Latin. It would be closer to "[Behold] My Lord and my God", or "My Lord and my God [is here]". And so on. The perfect translation does not exist, and it will more often than not lead us astray from many layers of meaning.
Comment by Carlos Ramalhete - 11 December 2008 @ 6:01 pm
As a seminarian on my pastoral internship year, I find it very difficult to find time to pray the full Divine Office in the 1962 form. I sometimes have to struggle even to be faithful to saying all the hours in the Liturgia Horarum, or the English Liturgy of the Hours. I prefer the Traditional Roman Breviary to the modern Office (in Latin or the vernacular), because I find the Traditional prayers and choice of readings to be much more theologically rich. I would really like to be able to pray the 1962 Roman Breviary in full each day, even though I very rarely have the opportunity of attending an Extraordinary Form Mass.
I was wondering if there are any priests here who do pray the 1962 Office regularly, while celebrating Mass principally in the Ordinary Form. Do you find difficulties adapting to the fact that you follow different calendars for the Mass and for the Office? Also, how would you go about finding the time, with your priestly ministry, to pray the entire 1962 faithfully every day, without falling into the temptation of grouping several hours together into one (like Terce, Sext and None)?
Thanks for any advice you may be able to provide me with.
Comment by Seminarian - 11 December 2008 @ 7:32 pm
I am surprised the shorter Angelus (now on sale!) set features Prime and Sext for weekdays and not Lauds and Vespers. Any idea why? I though the latter two were the more important hours.

Ann,
Thanks for the great post; I've had the argument that we didn't have a VCR. My wife won't let me translate that to a DVR, but with effort maybe we'll get there.
One minor quibble? Bobby Kennedy was in the mid-60s.
In terms of icons, you did bring back memories with Iron Eyes Cody but there was also Smokey the Bear (or am I off on years now?).

Other memories coming back: "The Point" - Harry Nilson's animated fable, where the main role of Oblio was voiced by Bobby Brady himself (Mike Lookinland) - we spent 2 weeks minimum discussing this in school whatever grade I was in when it came out. Excellent post as ever, Ann, and your insight into our TV generation is terrific. I imagine that my earliest TV-watching years - 67-75 - must have been FILLED with all manner of socially-conscious and revolutionary content, but whether my parents shielded it or my siblings and I simply didn't seek it out, it didn't filter in.
My only memory of TV-related rebellion was that my mom refused to let us watch Hogan's Heroes in the fear that we'd grow up thinking of the Nazis as a bunch of wacky cut-ups. Naturally, we watched the show in secret, my finger nervously on the change-channel button while I waited for the sound of my mother's footfalls on the steps. To this day when I hear the Hogan theme music, I experience a sudden sense memory and the unsettling sensation that I'm doing something I'm not supposed to.
But one positive, vaguely socially insightful experience I also recall with a strong sense of purpose was the Schoolhouse Rock shorts, most of which were simply educational, but a few of which had political messages as well.

I love this article. I confess, I am not a boomer - I am a genX. but I had the influence of being a military brat and living all over the US and Europe. I even (gasp) didn't have a tv until I was ten. Imagine the look of utter confusion on my six year old daughter's face… she can't fathom no tv, much less having to watch commercials, no cable, no dvr, etc…
Picture this - at four she came wandering into the living room while I was watching CSI (yes, I am an admitted crime show addict). I asked her to go back to her computer game (sigh) and she snorted at me and said in her chiding voice - "Mom, it's not like it's real - it's only tv!" (-:

Between your post and everyone's comments so far, I've definitely been taken back in time. My daughter is the one at 6 who made me recycle. I admit, I always had guilt about not recycling (i was raised jewish in NY so most things come with some sort of guilt feeling both good and bad) so her little caring words about the environment forced me to act. How could I not? She was so persuasive.
But on my own childhood and your comment about being the 4th brady sister. That's impossible, you would have had to have been the fifth! I was the 4th one. I could have been a Partridge family sister in the band too but I knew I was just not musically inclined so I resigned myself to the cool brady kids. I think I would have ended up kissing either Peter or Bobby behind the scenes like Marcia kissed Greg.
Thanks for the memories and the insight.

I follow you on Twitter, Father. I tend to use it as a way to update my friends on what I'm doing, since we go to different universities. I have it set up so I get mobile updates - in that respect, it's like sending a public text message to multiple people, but it's easier to have a conversation and share links because it's tethered to the Internet.
I know Twitter is popular with politicians and organizations that have a group of defined followers who will become Twitter "followers". This sort of application is good for updating that base on relevant or interesting activities (something more substantial, I suppose, than my kind of updates, which are usually "what I am eating right now" or "how I feel about final exams"). So far, I've been interested to see what you are up to on Twitter, Father. I think it can find a useful niche in your online activity.
Comment by W. Joseph Schrift - 11 December 2008 @ 2:48 pm
I agree with pretty much everything that people are saying but one of the awesome things about social networking/twitter like apps is being able to see into the life of. What I mean by that is it's an awesome way to build rapport. I don't care that you ate noodles with hot peanut sauce for lunch this afternoon, but i do like to see your blog posts on twitter. I do like to know what you are up to as well, so if it is eating, reading your brievary, saying mass, having a meeting etc. GREAT! I'm much more apt to forward your posts on if I know and like you. I already do from going to your masses occasionally when you are/were in town (St. Paul) or hearing/seeing you on Fox but not everyone is as fortunate as I, in that sense.
However much some people disagree with me it would be so nice if the Church, which is always under constant criticism, would be a little bit more transparent. The more transparent the more people are willing to respect what the church is because they know it inside and out. Same things with Priests today. What is a Priest life like? Maybe more interesting, what is a Rogue Priests life like? ;) It's nice to be able to relate with our clergy. So maybe next time we see each other we can trade secrets about Hot Chocolate or iphone apps…who cares? The thing is I get to know a little bit more about a priest I know and really like. Makes building a bond a whole bunch easier!
Of course their are limits to everything but that is what I get out of twitter and why it has worked well for our business and my networking. My $.02.
Thanks for you're great work.

Great to hear about your experience with Orbeon and Sling. Note that Form Builder/Form Runner has a REST API for persistence, and the basic CRUD operation should be easy to integrate with Sling. Search might be a little harder.
